PODCAST: Prememento Series 4 – Danny Wilson

Every season offers us both the hope of something different and also the crushing inevitability of the familiar. Joy and despair, thrown together like the deadliest of cocktails. Certainly, when it comes to toasting our victories and drowning our sorrows we know all about that. The Prememento Podcast is back for it’s fourth season. This year we’re going into the dugout. To the very nerve centre of a football team. More than any one individual, the person who holds everyone’s fate in their hands. Picking up where we left off, we will cover every team, every era and bridge the gap between today and tomorrow. We’re going to look back at all of the paths in football that led to this point and see where these roads may later lead. After all, the future is conceived in the past and forged in the present.

Not every success story is born of the most challenging of circumstances. Triumph doesn’t have to come out of extreme difficulty. Collective effort in football often means those kinds of burdens are shared. But hype and excitement often create a cocktail that only ever point toward the man in the dugout. Protagonists can find themselves in the heart of a story not for all their endearing qualities, nor an immediate desire to overcome their weaknesses. Sometimes it’s just about being in the right place at the right time. Or even the right place at the wrong time.

Barnsley only have one Premier League campaign to their name. For that Danny Wilson will remain relevant to a certain part of Yorkshire presumably for some time to come. It doesn’t matter however briefly the duration of their ascension but rather that they did it at all. Another crack at English top flight football was duly Wilson’s challenge to take up. Both on and off the pitch at Hillsborough there were more issues than he could have ever thought possible. How long can a man keep taking questions when he doesn’t have all the answers?
