PODCAST: Prememento Series 4 – Gordon Strachan

Every season offers us both the hope of something different and also the crushing inevitability of the familiar. Joy and despair, thrown together like the deadliest of cocktails. Certainly, when it comes to toasting our victories and drowning our sorrows we know all about that. The Prememento Podcast is back for it’s fourth season. This year we’re going into the dugout. To the very nerve centre of a football team. More than any one individual, the person who holds everyone’s fate in their hands. Picking up where we left off, we will cover every team, every era and bridge the gap between today and tomorrow. We’re going to look back at all of the paths in football that led to this point and see where these roads may later lead. After all, the future is conceived in the past and forged in the present.

Fundamentals don’t change. Within the consistency and changing of rules certain aspects of the game have been sculpted and nudged in very specific directions but that which held true many years ago should still be the same today. What’s more, each generation builds upon these foundations. Because those changes happen so quickly though, what can be seen as technically sound and tactically advanced one day can very quickly look antiquated.

The mid 90s into the early 2000s were the bedrock upon which the Premier League not only found it’s feet but soon began to walk and then run. Amongst all that would change during that time would be the fortunes – as well as the perception – of a fleet footed Scotsman who managed to take a Southampton team to an FA Cup Final as well as having the unfortunate fate of being the man who finally took Coventry down. Spanning from present day when his words got Strachan into trouble to his playing days when his feet did the talking. As ever, there is more to the story than meets the eye.
