PODCAST: Prememento Series 4 – Michael Laudrup

Every season offers us both the hope of something different and also the crushing inevitability of the familiar. Joy and despair, thrown together like the deadliest of cocktails. Certainly, when it comes to toasting our victories and drowning our sorrows we know all about that. The Prememento Podcast is back for it’s fourth season. This year we’re going into the dugout. To the very nerve centre of a football team. More than any one individual, the person who holds everyone’s fate in their hands. Picking up where we left off, we will cover every team, every era and bridge the gap between today and tomorrow. We’re going to look back at all of the paths in football that led to this point and see where these roads may later lead. After all, the future is conceived in the past and forged in the present.

Success – the tangible kind as opposed to the idea of it – means different things to different people. For those on the pitch, it’s the very high end aspect of their chosen careers and application of their ability. Elsewhere there are other memories to cherish. Wholly different experiences of the same events, yet collective all the same. While it is then inevitable that those involved will move on, the memories that they created will always sparkle and ignite the imagination.

Trying to find the exact high point of a club isn’t usually as easy as being able to draw a straight line up and down. Swansea had reached varying levels of what other clubs could have called a plateau and yet continued to keep going even as the man in the dugout changed. They would eventually find that summit in cup success, a European adventure for the ages and the kind of high profile manager that they could have only dreamed of once upon a time. As ever, in spite of all that this one doesn’t quite have the fairytale ending.
